Without any effort, it moves through the sand. After reports Monday that a Mesa man was saved from quicksand at Zion National Park in Utah, our newsroom was buzzing about the fact that quicksand is actually real and not just something you. After the rope is burnt, the ball falls into the sand in one movement. At the time of Apollo missions, dry quicksand was seen as a potential hazard, and it may exist on planet Mars and the Moon as well. The ball was filled with tiny bronze balls to be able to vary the weight. ![]() Touching the surface of the sand, the researcher hung a four centimetre pingpong ball on a thin rope. When the stream of air is closed off, the grains move down to form a very loose packing (just 41 vol percent). The bottom of the container has holes in it, through which air is blown. To create dry quicksand, the scientist filled a container with very fine grain sand (grains of about 0,04 millimetres). In other words: it is possible to influence the 'support capabilities' of sand. Quicksand is the result of flowing water rising fast enough to partially lift sand grains so that they are no longer entirely supported by the grains under them. The well known quicksand is a mixture with force chains that are substantially weaker. Frederick II of Prussia ( Janu August 17, 1786) was king of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. Sand is usually able to support weight relying on internal force chains. A single Voltaire will do more honor to France than a thousand pedants, a thousand false wits, a thousand great men of inferior order. Lohse and his researchers Remco Rauhé, Raymond Bergmann and Deveraj van der Meer created something they call ‘dry quicksand’.
